The Participatory Communication Research (PCR) section of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) invites submissions of abstracts for papers and panel proposals for the 2016 IAMCR conference to be held from 27-31 July, 2016 at the University of Leicester, in Leicester, UK. The deadline for submissions is 15 February, 2016.

Participatory Communication Research Section
The Participatory Communication Research Section (PCR) explores the theory and practice of participatory communication, and has played an important role as a platform for new thinking. The PCR section addresses issues related to communication processes within the local, regional, national or international spheres and the ways in which communication, information and/or media foster social change through participation. While the PCR section has traditionally accommodated creative approaches to participatory communication, it has over recent years, intentionally encouraged inter-disciplinary methods marked by critique and innovation.
This year’s conference theme allows the section an opportunity to highlight research related to participatory communication to explore the relationships between memory, commemoration and communication. The PCR section will look at innovative opportunities to delineate communication processes in the negotiation, preservation and archiving of history and culture. The section will be highlighting issues related to the scope of participatory action in the mediation of the past and the reproduction of cultural narratives.
In addition to submissions related to the conference theme the section also welcomes contributions that discuss theoretical or methodological perspectives on a variety of participatory communication research issues and specific case studies.
The section invites proposals for papers presentation, panels and themed sessions that engage with any of the following themes:
A. Research that relates to PCR in the context of this year’s IAMCR theme on memory, commemoration and communication, such as:
A.1 The mediation of the past; documented, remembered, forgotten and retold.
A.2 The relationship between memory and colonialism.
A.3 The mediation of culture and history through story-telling.
A.4 The media’s role in reproducing cultural narratives and commemorations.
B. Research that pertains to PCR’s interest areas including the theory and application of participatory communication in a wide variety of fields, such as:
B.1 Advances in participatory communication: theory, methods and practice
B.2 Participatory communication for social justice
B.3 Participatory communication influencing democracy, citizen rights and identity politics
B.4 Participatory communication and civic engagement in local governance in rural and urban contexts
B.5 Participatory media for social change
B.6 Participatory communication and ICTs
B.7 Communication for sustainable development
B.8 Gender and participation
B.9 Participatory communication, voice and public sphere
Please provide a reference of the theme number at the bottom of the abstract if submitting to any of the specific themes listed above.
The section welcomes abstracts in English, French and Spanish. We expect the papers accepted to the conference to be presented in the language of the abstract submitted, and will arrange sessions accordingly.
Abstracts should be submitted only via IAMCR's Open Conference System (OCS) from 1 December 2015 – 15 February 2016.
The deadline for submission of abstracts is 15 February 2016. The OCS system will close at midnight GMT on 15 February 2016.
Both individual and panel submissions are welcome. All proposals must be submitted through the online Open Conference System. Early submission is strongly encouraged. There are to be no email submissions of abstracts addressed to any Section or Working Group Head.
This section accepts abstracts in English, French or Spanish, and will arrange for presentations in the three languages.
It is expected that for the most part, only one (1) abstract will be submitted per person for consideration by the Conference. However, under no circumstances should there be more than two (2) abstracts bearing the name of the same applicant either individually or as part of any group of authors. Please note also that the same abstract or another version with minor variations in title or content must not be submitted to other Sections or Working Groups of the Association for consideration, after an initial submission. Such submissions will be deemed to be in breach of the conference guidelines and will be automatically rejected by the Open Conference System, by the relevant Head or by the Conference Program Reviewer. Such applicants risk being removed entirely from the conference program.
Upon submission of an abstract, you will be asked to confirm that your submission is original and that it has not been previously published in the form presented. You will also be given an opportunity to declare if your submission is currently before another conference for consideration.
Presenters are expected to bring fully developed work to the conference. Prior to the conference, it is expected that a completed paper will be submitted to the Section, Session Chairs, and/or Discussants.
